“The phrase mono no aware… refers to the sensitive, exquisite feelings experienced when encountering the subtle workings of human life or the changing seasons…” Suntory Museum of Art
I became familiar with mono no aware while showing The Tulip Series in 2013. The phrase resonated deeply with me, putting into words the feeling that infuses much of my work. The period during which these images were created was laced with impermanence, transience, and loss. The resulting photos are imbued with the gentle beauty of life that persists even as we experience its diminishment.
